Did you really all give away your cellphone number or credit card to approve your facebook account? I thought I could use a fake one just for the API Key to make the Facebook connector possible on my server. But thats not so easy...
Any ideas? I certainly won't give Facebook any of my personal data xD
and trash-sms.com isn't available anymore, simser.info only offers one number and that one was already used to approve a account -.-

Ok, thats a possibility, but there I have to give them my adress and so on. However, better than giving it to Facebook xD

You can't, no - each app needs to register it's namespace or it won't work (I've just tried to use this connector on another server).

You can, of course, use one dev account for more than one app.

Since I've already made the sacrifice of letting Facebook abuse me for the greater good, I suppose I could create apps for other servers too, but there are levels of trust required for that.

That would be a great thing! Not that I want to question your worries :D But what can someone do with your API key? Is it because this is now connected to your real name?

The Facebook connector can potentially be blocked, though it hasn't happened to anybody yet. But imagine somebody using it to spam, or otherwise abuse it, and the app being banned. That's fine...but imagine one person has hundreds of API keys, and then their account gets banned - everybody's breaks then.

Likewise, there's nothing to stop you falling out with whoever you got the keys from, and them pulling the plug out of spite.

Also, there's a little bit of information about users included. Only their country, and the number of them, but that could change. There's a potential privacy issue there (though a negligible one for anyone using Facebook in the first place). Your Facebook connector will then be covered by a) the privacy policy of whoever gave you the keys, and b) the imaginary one Facebook wrote.

Finally, there's the PITA issue - I can't test your app. A typo in the registration will stop it working, and that can cause problems working out whose fault it is.

Our burgeoning GPG web of trust c/should help with this. We might think more how this might work.

I am ironically in the position that I might have to set up an FB account just so I can do the FB connector business on my impending instance. This thought does not appeal in the slightest.

I had left FB for well over a year and had to re-register just to get an app key and write the initial Facebook connector. Once I "finished" (software is never finished) the connector I turned it off on my own site.

I don't recall exactly when, but I've since turned it back on (software is never finished) and I use it to communicate with old friends. Mostly on my terms - I can always see what they're doing and I comment on rare occasions.

But in response to the initial thread, I gave them my (real) cell phone number. It was the least dangerous of the two options. I suppose they can text me, but they can't leak my credit card info through a bug. I'm not that concerned that they know I'm a real person and live south of Sydney - that information is freely available. Their login cookie tracking (which is scattered all over the web) is much more dangerous IMO than having my cell provider info.

If a government wanted to monitor my phone, they already have access to that info. They don't need Facebook.
